Our family is very blessed to live on about 110 acres located in Fleming County Kentucky. The farm is on a dead end country lane, and to us, is our sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. As you can tell from our farm name we are very “fortunate” to have more than our share of rocks, some as big as tractor tires just lying on top on the ground. But our farm name also has a very personal meaning to our family as well. As you can see from the rest of the web site we do have a few farm animals and poultry, but the majority of the farm is in grass and we have it cut and rolled for hay each year.
Over the last few years as we have read and self taught ourselves, we have been changing to a more organic and natural approach to the way we live and feed our family. What we cannot raise and put up ourselves, we try to buy locally or buy organic from the store. There is a lot of talk today about how far our food travels and the extra cost involved, and I think there is something to that. There seems to be a movement toward supporting local farmers and buying locally grown foods. That is a great idea and one I hope takes off. We are not fanatics about it, but we just feel that why put all of those extra things in our bodies when we don’t have to. This may or may not work for your family, but it works for ours and I give my wife all the credit for making it happen.
We are really trying to grow with open pollinated seeds and use heirloom varieties in our garden. As we add livestock we want to add heritage breeds, breeds that are in danger of becoming extinct. What is wrong with the way God created our plants, our seeds, our animals? Over the years we have “changed”, “Improved” and “hybridized” almost everything to get maximum production at the lowest possible cost. But what have we lost in that process? I would say flavor and nutrition just to name a couple. Many of the garden plant and farm animals that our grand-parents and our great grandparents grew on their farms are almost gone. I think it is a very worthwhile cause to try and save as many of these as we can for future generations. For more information, check out our Links page.
I have been BLESSED with a wonderful wife and three beautiful daughters, and I dedicate this web site to them.
